Topic-level subscriptions now available on forum; e-mail notifications revised and corrected.

Following a very extensive update to the forum software, it is now possible to "subscribe" both to an individual topic and to an entire forum.  When you subscribe to a forum, you will be notified whenever a new comment is made on an existing topic, or when a new topic is added.  You will not be notified about your own posts, nor when the owner of a post merely edits its content.

Your subscription will apply in like manner to any sub-forums which the subscribed forum contains.

Notifications are sent out twice a day.  The format of these e-mails has changed from what the forum software previously used.  You will receive only one copy of a notification no matter how many "reasons" there might be for sending it to you.

You must have an e-mail on record.  (See E-Mails at the top of the page.)  The e-mail which you entered to verify your account is not automatically used for this purpose.

Click on Subscriptions on any forum page to see the topics that you are subscribed to and, on a separate linked page, all the forums.

Here's how it works:

Subscribing and Unsubscribing:  You can subscribe to topics within a forum, or to the forums in which the topics are contained.  When you subscribe to a forum, you will be notified of all new postings within any topic – old or new – within that forum and every sub-forum, old or new, which that forum contains.

Both topics and forums contain a button at the top or bottom which will say Subscribe if you are not subscribed, or Unsubscribe if you are.  Simply click this button to carry out the listed action.

To Review Your Current Subscriptions:  At the top of the forum page there is a hyperlink which says Subscriptions.  Click this link to go to a page that will show you any topic-level subscriptions that you may have.  This page then contains a hyperlink to a separate page which lists your forum-level subscriptions.  To remove any subscription, first follow the link to the topic or forum, then click Unsubscribe.

When and How Notifications Are Run:  Notifications are e-mailed out several times a day by an offline scheduled task.  You must have an e-mail address on file (see "E-Mails" at the very top of every site page) in order to receive notifications.  You will receive only one email about any particular activity no matter how many "reasons" you now have to receive one.

Notifications are queued when a new topic or comment is created, not each time it is revised.  You will not receive notification concerning your own posts.  (You will receive notifications of comments made about topics which you started.)
