Meeting notes: February 8, 2003

Greetings to all.

On February 8 the Georgia Geocachers Association held its 21st meeting at the REI store near Perimeter Mall. There were 40 members in attendance, plus five two-legged new members, and a four-legged new member.

As usual, REI proved to be excellent hosts. KC, one of the managers in the store, welcomed us and gave a brief overview of REI. In addition, he added a number of items to our door prize table.

The main agenda item was a presentation by Greg (mtn-man) on the popular topic of paperless geocaching. Due to the popularity of this topic, Greg will be placing the documentation and links on the GGA web page. Watch for an announcement on our web site.

Following the break, we conducted the drawings for door prizes. Among the many items donated were 25 thank-you gifts from our member Gossamyrrh?s employer. Our faithful support of 5 Seasons Brewing in the recent poll helped push their total over the top, and the gifts were in recognition of that support.

Greg (mtn-man) showed the new 2003 GGA Calendar featuring photos from Georgia?s Geocachers. He also mentioned that the GGA has opened a new CafeShops store called GGACustoms. We will help cachers customize GGA gear with their nicks or photos. The web address is http://www.cafeshops.com/ggacustoms. Contact mtn-man for assistance.

Member ngnear told the meeting of the Rockdale County parks organization?s interest in geocaching. He said that the parks were interesting in allowing Geocaches as an activity to draw people to the parks. He wanted to get some ideas for some sort of all day caching event, which happened to be another item on the agenda for the day! DaRebel and mtn-man said that it would be great to have the spring challenge event in Rockdale County. A suggestion was raised by DaRebel to open a Challenge Planning Forum and begin to initiate some planning for the spring event.

There was a brief discussion regarding the potential ban in the Chattahoochee Area. No further information is available at this time as the Chattahoochee NRA considers Erik?s proposal. Members were advised that more information will be made available on the GGA Forums when available. Greg (mtn-man) mentioned that the Forest Service is now enforcing the ban on caches in Wilderness Areas in the National Forest. General forest areas are acceptable for caches, which leave 85 percent of the National Forest open to Geocaching.

The next meeting is on March 8th. The event cache page will be posted on the geocaching web site. See waypoint GCD3A2 after the page has been approved.

Happy geocaching!
