Meeting notes: October 12, 2002

Greetings to all.

On October 12 the Georgia Geocachers Association held its 17th meeting at Roswell Area Park. There were 19 members in attendance, including one new member.

Erik van Dyck did a "Back to Basics" presentation, borrowing heavily from material from bent_twigs. Using visual aids, Erik showed how a GPSr display would appear as a cache location is approached on a meandering trail. Erik and other members offered several tips on compass usage, triangulation, and other helpful methods learned on the trail.

Mtn-man led a discussion that was entitled "Best Caches in GA" incorporating ideas spawned by sparc77 posting on the EZBoard. A geocacher in the Chicago area, Markwell, has also shared some cache rating ideas with us, and Greg covered these as well. A new topic has been started on our EZBoard to continue the creative process.

After the break, mtn-man briefly overviewed the succession planning work the steering committee (SC) has done over the past few months. The SC's learning since June of 2001 has been folded into a steering committee member job description so members interested in serving can gain an understanding of what is involved.

Of the original six members of the steering committee, one resigned and two others have decided that they will not stand for nomination for an additional term. Both George Beecher and Jess Bowers addressed the meeting and explained how their job workloads had cut into the time they can spend geocaching and working on SC business. They will remain engaged for a month after new members are elected to assist with any transitional issues.

Mtn-man then went on to provide an overview of the nomination and voting procedure, the details of which, as well as the SC member job description, have been posted in the member area of the EZBoard. We strongly encourage all members to review this material and participate in the nomination and voting process. For instructions on reaching the member area of the EZBoard, see below.

The next meeting is on November 9th, at a location on the south side of Atlanta. The event cache page has been submitted to the geocaching web site and should be approved in a day or so.

Happy geocaching!

—Brad
